Where Are You in Your Arizona Notary Career?

Preparing to Become a Notary

You're learning Arizona's commissioning requirements, preparing for the state examination, and beginning to understand the responsibilities that come with the commission.

Commissioned, But Still Finding Your Footing

You've completed the commissioning process, but now you're handling appointments, unfamiliar documents, identification questions, and the practical responsibilities of notarial work.

Ready to Build a Stronger Business

You want to become more visible, develop professional relationships, serve clients consistently, and make better decisions about the notary business you're building.

Wherever you are today, your next step should support what you're actually trying to accomplish.

Understanding Arizona's Notary Requirements

Arizona notaries public are commissioned by the Arizona Secretary of State. Applicants must meet state eligibility requirements, pass the required examination, obtain a notary bond, and complete the application process.

Becoming an Arizona Notary Public

Applicants must meet Arizona's age, residency, citizenship or lawful permanent residency, English-language, and background eligibility requirements.

The Arizona Secretary of State administers the commissioning process and provides official instructions, applications, and reference materials.

Arizona Notary Education and Renewal

Since July 1, 2025, Arizona has required new and renewing notaries to pass a competency examination.

The examination covers material from the state's Notary Public Reference Manual. Arizona notaries must also meet the state's requirements for commissioning, bonds, notarial records, and authorized notarial acts.

An Important Arizona Notary Law Change

Effective September 12, 2026, Arizona added a right-thumbprint journal requirement for certain documents, including specified real-property documents and powers of attorney.

This is one example of why maintaining current knowledge matters throughout a notary's commission. Requirements can change, and a procedure learned years ago may need to be updated.

Official Arizona Resources

The Arizona Secretary of State is the controlling authority for notary commissioning and official guidance. Use its current instructions and publications when preparing for commissioning, renewal, or notarial work.

Your Commission Is Only the Beginning

Passing Arizona's notary examination demonstrates an understanding of the material tested. But an examination cannot prepare you for every situation you'll encounter.

What happens when a signer presents an unfamiliar document? When you're uncertain whether identification meets Arizona's requirements? When a procedure changes and you need to determine what applies to your next appointment?

These are situations where continued education, sound judgment, and familiarity with current state requirements matter.

Professional development helps you strengthen your understanding, recognize when you need to verify information, and build the practical skills and business systems that support your work.

Your commission authorizes the work. What you learn and implement afterward shapes how you perform it.
