Where Are You in Your California Notary Career?
Wherever you are today, your next step should support what you're actually trying to accomplish.
Understanding California's Notary Requirements
California notaries public are commissioned by the California Secretary of State. Becoming commissioned requires meeting specific eligibility, education, examination, and background-check requirements.
Becoming a California Notary Public
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, be legal California residents, complete approved education, pass the required examination, and clear a background check.
California also requires applicants to complete the commissioning process, including fingerprinting and the filing of the oath and bond as applicable.
Ā
California Notary Education and Renewal
First-time California notary applicants must complete an approved six-hour education course.
Currently commissioned California notaries who previously completed an approved six-hour course may qualify for the three-hour refresher course if they complete the refresher and take the notary examination and submit their reappointment application before their commission expires.
If the current commission expires before those conditions are satisfied, an approved six-hour course is required.
Official California Resources
The California Secretary of State is the controlling authority for notary commissioning and requirements. Always refer to its current publications and instructions when preparing for an application, renewal, or notarial act.

Your Commission Is Only the Beginning
Passing an examination and receiving a commission are important accomplishments. But the examination cannot prepare you for every situation you'll encounter.
What happens when a signer presents an unfamiliar document? When a client asks a question outside your authority? When you understand the notarial act but aren't sure how to organize the business around it?
These are the moments when continued education, sound judgment, and practical experience matter.
Professional development gives you opportunities to strengthen your knowledge, recognize your limits, practice your skills, and develop the business systems that support your work.
Your commission authorizes the work. What you learn and implement afterward shapes how you perform it.
