Understanding GeorgiaĀ Notary Requirements

Georgia notaries public are appointed and commissioned by the Clerk of Superior Court in the appropriate county. The Georgia Superior Court Clerks' Cooperative Authority (GSCCCA) maintains statewide notary information and provides application resources, mandatory education, and guidance.

Becoming a Georgia Notary Public

Applicants generally must be at least 18 years old, be U.S. citizens or legal residents, be able to read and write English, and meet Georgia's other statutory eligibility requirements.

Georgia residents apply through the Clerk of Superior Court in their county of residence. A limited exception exists for qualifying residents of neighboring states who work or conduct business in Georgia.

Applicants must complete the required notary education, submit their application, pay the applicable appointment fee, take the oath of office, and obtain the required notary seal.

Georgia notary commissions are issued for four-year terms.

Georgia Notary Education and Reappointment

Beginning January 1, 2025, Georgia requires applicants for both initial appointments and reappointments to complete an approved notary education course.

The Georgia Superior Court Clerks' Cooperative Authority provides an online training course addressing notary laws, duties, procedures, and professional responsibilities.

The required training must be completed before an initial appointment and within 30 days before each subsequent renewal appointment.

What Makes Georgia's Commissioning Process Different?

Georgia's commissioning process operates at the county level. The appropriate Clerk of Superior Court processes the appointment and administers the oath.

Georgia does not require a surety bond for its notaries public.

Although a Georgia notary is commissioned through a county, the notary's authority to perform authorized notarial acts generally extends throughout the state.

Understanding these distinctions helps applicants begin with accurate information and recognize where to obtain official guidance.

OfficialĀ Georgia Notary Resources

The Georgia Superior Court Clerks' Cooperative Authority provides statewide educational and administrative resources. The county Clerk of Superior Court handles commissioning, while Georgia law establishes the duties and limitations of notaries public.

Always consult current official sources when preparing for commissioning, reappointment, or notarial practice.

Your Commission Is Only the Beginning

Completing Georgia's mandatory education and receiving your commission establish an important foundation. But the real work introduces situations that don't always come with straightforward answers.

What happens when someone presents an unfamiliar document? When a signer cannot produce the identification you expected? When a client asks you to handle something beyond your authority as a notary?

And if you're building a business, how do you become known by the people and organizations most likely to need your services?

Continued education, professional judgment, practical experience, and business development help you prepare for these challenges.

Your commission authorizes the work. What you learn and implement afterward shapes how you perform it.
