Where Are You in Your Texas Notary Career?
Wherever you are today, your next step should support what you're actually trying to accomplish.
Understanding Texas Notary Requirements
Texas notaries public are commissioned by the Texas Secretary of State. The state establishes eligibility, education, bonding, and application requirements for individuals seeking a traditional notary commission.
Becoming a Texas Notary Public
Applicants generally must be at least 18 years old, be Texas residents, and meet the state's criminal-history eligibility requirements.
Traditional notary applicants must satisfy the Secretary of State's education requirement, obtain the required $10,000 surety bond, and complete the state application process.
The Texas Secretary of State administers notary commissioning through its SOS Notary Portal, which also supports renewals and commission management.Â
Texas Notary Education and Renewal
Texas adopted mandatory education requirements for new and renewing notaries under legislation enacted in 2025. Beginning January 1, 2026, applicants submitting new or renewal applications must satisfy the applicable education requirement established and offered by the Texas Secretary of State.
These requirements apply to traditional and online notary commissions.
Inner Circle membership provides additional professional development but does not replace the Secretary of State's required education.
Â
Traditional and Online Notarization in Texas
Texas authorizes traditional notarization and online notarization under separate legal requirements.
An individual seeking an online notary commission must hold a current traditional Texas notary commission and satisfy additional state requirements for online notarization.
The two practices involve different procedures, technology, and recordkeeping responsibilities.
Understanding which rules apply to a particular notarial act is part of responsible professional practice.
Official Texas Resources
The Texas Secretary of State is the commissioning authority and primary source of official guidance for Texas notaries.
Review its current instructions, statutes, administrative rules, and educational materials when preparing for commissioning or performing notarial acts.

Your Commission Is Only the Beginning
Completing Texas's required education and receiving your commission are important steps. But meeting the commissioning requirements is just the beginning of what you'll encounter in actual practice.
What happens when a client asks you to notarize something you've never seen? When you're unsure which identification method applies? When you're deciding whether online notarization fits the services you want to offer?
And once you're comfortable performing notarial acts, how do you build a business that brings clients to you consistently?
These are the situations where continued education, sound professional judgment, practical experience, and business development matter.
Your commission authorizes the work. What you learn and implement afterward shapes how you perform it.

Build the Skills and Business That Fit Your Goals
Texas notaries have different goals. Some want to serve their local communities through traditional notarizations. Others are interested in developing mobile notary businesses, exploring online notarization, or strengthening the professional systems they already use.
Your development should reflect your commission, the services you're authorized to provide, your personal circumstances, and what you want to accomplish.
Inside the Inner Circle, The Implementation Path helps members identify their current stage and focus on the work that matters most.
